Firefighters: psychopathology and working conditions / Bombeiros: psicopatologia e condições de trabalho

Firefighters perform all kinds of rescues. Their job places them in potentially traumatic situations which may cause work-related mental disorders. This study aimed to investigate the working conditions and mental health of firefighters in Southern Brazil. The research subjects included 25 men and 2 women. The authors analyzed the anxiety, depression, alcohol use, post-traumatic stress disorder, and work environment of the firefighters, by means of scales, a questionnaire and an interview. Descriptive analysis and correlation measures were used, based on the variables of interest and content analysis. The results indicated that these professionals need higher salaries, better equipment and more training. Personal valorization and conversations with superiors were cited as positive aspects. Regarding the main aim of the study, the authors found correlations between alcohol abuse and length of service, alcohol abuse and age, and depression and age. O bombeiro realiza todo tipo de salvamento, o que coloca esse trabalhador em situações potencialmente traumáticas que podem ocasionar transtornos mentais associados ao trabalho. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi investigar as condições de trabalho e a saúde mental dos bombeiros, no sul do Brasil. Houve a participação de 25 homens e duas mulheres. Foram avaliados ansiedade, depressão, uso de álcool, Transtorno de Estresse Pós-Traumático e condições de trabalho, por meio de escalas, questionários e entrevista. Utilizaram-se análises descritivas e de medidas correlacionais entre variáveis de interesse e análise de conteúdo. Os resultados indicaram necessidades de melhorias no salário, equipamentos e treinamento. A valorização pessoal e diálogo com superiores foram citados como pontos positivos. Quanto ao objetivo principal, foram encontradas correlações entre consumo de álcool e tempo de serviço, uso desta substância e idade e entre depressão e idade. Reflexões acerca do atendimento psicológico a desempregados / Reflections on psychological counseling to unemployed individuals

Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar algumas reflexões feitas acerca do Atendimento Psicológico a Desempregados. Esta experiência trata de uma parceria entre a Unisinos e FGTAS/SINE São Leopoldo/RS, iniciada em 2003. Visando fazer articulações entre a Psicologia do Trabalho e a Psicologia Clínica, salientamos a importância de se agregar estas duas áreas, de forma complementar, como uma junção de áreas que pensa, de forma ampliada, as demandas e representações do sujeito total, que sofre com o trabalho ou com a falta dele. O desemprego origina, muitas vezes, experiências de solidão, desamparo e desespero, como atestam as queixas trazidas por esta clientela. Refletindo-se a partir das falas de pacientes, no processo terapêutico, procuraremos apresentar a psicoterapia como uma forma de possibilidade de suporte para a situação existencial desencadeada pelo desemprego.

This paper presents some reflections on psychological counselling sessions with unemployed individuals. This research has been enabled because of a partnership between Unisinos and FGTAS/SINE-São Leopoldo which began in 2003. The authors argue that Labor Psychology and Clinic Psychology might come together as an important aggregation of two different branches of psychology that takes into consideration, in a comprehensive fashion, the needs and representations of the total self, one who suffers from his/her job or with the lack thereof. Unemployement is many times the origin of experiences of loneliness, contempt and dispair as the complaints of the patients in the data attest. Through reflections on the patients’ discourse during counselling sessions, the authors try to present psychotherapy as a possible tool of support to the existential experiences that are brought about by unemployment.

Bombeiros: um olhar sobre a qualidade de vida no trabalho / Firefighters: a look over the quality of life at work

Este trabalho apresenta uma intervenção no corpo de bombeiros (São Leopoldo - RS) realizada pelo NEPT (Núcleo de Excelência em Psicologia do Trabalho). Utilizamos um diagnóstico com sessenta e três entrevistas semi-estruturadas sobre o trabalho e funcionamento da corporação. Partindo da análise deste, propusemos palestras sobre estresse e qualidade de vida no trabalho (QVT). Foram levantados questionamentos acerca do mito do herói e do amor pela profissão bombeiro, que deixa em segundo plano seus problemas. Destacou-se o estresse no trabalho por situações traumáticas, como risco de vida eminente e mortes nos salvamentos. Entendemos que as intervenções contribuíram como espaço de escuta que propiciou reflexões a respeito da QVT.

This paper presents an intervention at the firefighters' corporation (São Leopoldo - Rs) performed by the NEPT (Núcleo de Excelência em Psicologia do Trabalho). We used a diagnosis made by 63 semi-structured interviews about the corporation's function and operation. From this analysis, we proposed lectures on stress and quality of life at work (QVT). Questions were raised about the myth of the hero and the love for the firefighter profession, that makes people put their jobs at the first place in their lives. The stress caused by traumatic situations, such as constant life risk and deaths in rescues were emphasized. We concluded that the interventions contributed as a hearing opportunity that led to reflections about QVT.
